Introducing Blue & White Week

Catholic Schools Week takes a new form on campus.

Across the nation, the last week of January is traditionally known as Catholic Schools Week, when we celebrate the uniqueness of our Catholic identity. In national history, the celebration of Catholic Schools Week was instituted in 1974. In school history, Catholic Schools Week was also known as Spirit Week. However, at the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the student council had the idea to separate Spirit Week and make it its own event. By moving Spirit Week to a later date, we are able to reinvent Catholic Schools Week by focusing on the theme of bobcat pride. The student council decided to randomly assign every student to one of the school colors, blue or white, for the events and competitions that fall in Catholic Schools Week, and so, Blue & White Week was born.

Blue & White Week was created with the intention of celebrating our the school and growing appreciation for the school. As Lourdes students, we get to be part of an incredible community, which starts with our Team OLLA members. By honoring Team OLLA’s teacher of the year (Congrats, Deacon Louie) and by dressing up as our beloved Team OLLA members on Monday of Blue & White Week, we show our appreciation for those that make the school as amazing as it is. Our faculty and staff bring intelligence, creativity, dedication and love to every corner of the school.

The student body itself motivates the school community. By honoring our spring athletes at the Blue & White Week Pep Rally, cheering for our dance and cheer teams, and competing in dodgeball, students were given the opportunity to show off their bobcat pride. Cheering each other on helps to motivate and strengthen our community. This pep rally also included a surprise event; a dance-off between 2 Lola the Bobcats. Students and faculty were surprised to see that the winning Lola was Luly Careaga, a Lourdes alumni, mom, and the first ever mascot of our school. Finally, the student council created a special schedule for the Friday of Blue & White Week. Through the Jeopardy and Sister Trivia games, we continue celebrating the uniqueness of our school by highlighting unique aspects through questions ranging from school sports to nun-trivia.

Blue & White Week was created to add an extra dose of love and gratitude for the school. Being part of this faith-filled, supportive community is a blessing that changes lives. The school is committed to educating young women “to face the future strengthened by their faith, prepared and confident in their abilities to achieve their goals and committed to their Catholic and American heritages.” We hope Blue & White Week serves its purpose of strengthening unity in our school community.
