Varsity Volleyball secured their fourth straight victory in the district finals, with a dominant victory against Terra in three straight sets. The girls have their eyes set on a return to the State Championship game.
“This win reflects all the hard work me and my team have put in the last 4 years to reach this accomplishment every year,” senior co-captain Sophia Gonzalez said. “Winning it for the last time was truly full circle.”
This win extends their nine-game winning streak, as they emerged victorious with a 0.313 hitting percentage and 3 total blocks. Gonzalez was among the lead attackers, with her 50% kill percentage.
“All 4 years we have been very good skill-wise but this team is unlike any I’ve ever been a part of, we all connect really well,” Gonzalez said. “I think our love for each other and the game will carry us very far.”
Despite being an away game, students and parents packed the gym in blue, waving the Lourdes flags all round. The team’s biggest fan, Senior Jenna Acosta’s dad, is seen at every game waving the Lourdes flag and getting fans excited.
“Seeing everyone in blue and hearing the crowd cheer us on makes every hard practice worth it. It reminds us why we love this team so much,” Acosta said.
Sophomore Juliette Vazquez-Bello led the team with a total of 11 kills, followed by the Player of the Game junior Lexie Espin with 7 kills.
The team won their last game at Pembroke Pines Charter in the regional quarterfinals, continuing on the road to ultimate victory. They have been tested many times but hope to rise above the challenges and reach every goal. One particular phrase has been the team’s motto this year: “challenges create champions”. As they prepare to face more fierce competition this season, their successes only mark the path to the state championship.
