On January 26, 2020, Billie Eilish became the third artist to sweep the “big four” Grammys: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. She broke various records, including overthrowing Taylor Swift as the youngest artist to win Album of the Year.

While no one person took home the “big four” this year on March 14th, it was still an eventful and historic night.

After winning four Grammys, Beyoncé became the most awarded woman in Grammy history, with a whopping overall total of 28 Grammy wins. Taylor Swift took home her third Album of the Year award with “folklore,” which made her the first female artist to win this award thrice.

However, who exactly is voting for these Grammy winners?

The Recording Academy has cultivated a list of voters made up of musical artists, producers, engineers, and songwriters. These voters cast their votes online for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and a maximum of 15 additional categories.

Grammy voters are instructed to vote in the 15 categories in which they have the most expertise. Since to err is human, there can never be a truly flawless system for Grammy voting. Ultimately, only one opinion out of many will prevail, since there can only be one winner for each award.

Many people have taken to social media to announce who they would have voted for since the awards were aired. Some people have said that Tame Impala’s “The Slow Rush” should have won Best Alternative Music Album, that Doja Cat deserved to win Best New Artist, and an unending plethora of other opinions.

Senior Victoria Stolarczyk said that Billie Eilish, who spent the majority of her acceptance speech saying that Megan Thee Stallion deserved the award, truly did deserve the Grammy for Record of the Year.

“I think ‘Everything I Wanted’ was, lyrically, a better song than ‘Savage’ and deserved the award,” said Stolarczyk.

Even Elton John jokingly said he would “hit someone” if Phoebe Bridgers was not awarded with a Grammy (she wasn’t). Sources have not named his victim as of yet.

Other opinions surround the Recording Academy’s use of the popularity surrounding its performers’ names.

“The Recording Academy used Harry Styles’ name … and then he got the least amount of time to perform compared to all the other performers,” senior Natalia Cuadros said.

For a week leading up to the ceremony, the Grammys were heavily advertising its performances, including the opening of the ceremony by Styles. Where other artists, such as Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift, had around five minute long performances spanning more than one song, Harry Styles had a three and a half minute long performance, in which he only sang “Watermelon Sugar.”

The winners of the coveted Grammy award win based on the opinions of their professional musical peers. Oftentimes, this system may be problematic due to unconscious and conscious bias. Though this award is definitely an honor to receive, it isn’t the deciding factor on which album or which artist was better than another.

The true ‘song of the year’ or ‘album of the year’ is the one that you would have voted for, whether it was nominated or not. For you, maybe the song of the year was “Don’t Stop the Party” by Pitbull or “Gucci Flip Flops” by Bhad Bhabie. At the end of the day, these awards do not really matter; the impact that music has on the listener does.
