Hot Pink Awareness

Cancer Awareness for the month of October.

October is not only known for scary stories and candy, but for raising awareness to a disease that affects over 280,000 women yearly: breast cancer.

October is breast cancer awareness month and at an all girls school, the community takes breast cancer awareness seriously. The school has various events to raise money for this cause.

This year, hot pink polos were introduced and are now available for purchase at the Bobcat Boutique, with a percentage of every sale going to the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida.

These limited editions to the school’s uniform can be worn every day of October, excluding mass days. Students were quick to purchase the $30 polos, and are now can be seen throughout the school.

“The polos are super cute and they’re a great way to spice up the uniform,” junior Nicole El Harati said.

Other merchandise is available for purchase as well, such as pink socks with the breast cancer logo imprinted onto them and a HOPE candle, the proceeds of which will support breast cancer research.

The school’s sports teams also do their part in spreading awareness. The JV and Varsity volleyball teams designate a game known as the “Dig Pink” of the season, where all ticket proceeds will go to breast cancer research.

The girls even have a special pink jersey to show their support for this heart wrenching cause.

“This year’s game is worth spirit points for everyone who attends, and it’s definitely going to be a fun game since we’re playing Carrollton, ” three-year Varsity starter junior Carmen Rionda said.

Rionda, along with all of the other volleyball players, want everyone to show their support on Thursday, October 14th when the volleyball teams play what is bound to be the biggest game of the season.

Overall, the students and staff members at OLLA go above and beyond to fundraise and raise awareness to cancer foundations. Every cent is one step closer to help cancer awareness, and a cure. So in honor of this month, don’t forget to show your bobcat pride and buy pink gear to help breast cancer foundations.
