The new social media craze Tiktok is taking over. Can it help build the new generation of dancers, singers, and creatives?

Social media apps are becoming a more prevalent part of young life. The newest and most popular of these apps is TikTok, an app used to express yourself through creating short comedy, lip syncing, and more predominantly; dancing videos. Thousands of dance videos go viral on TikTok daily, along with the songs that are being danced to. With this being said, it is no surprise that many notable music artists have kick started their careers on this app.

One big name in TikTok is Haley Sharpe, who has created many viral dances to some well known songs such as Say So by Doja Cat and Money Trees by Kendrick Lamar along with many others. TikTok stars like Haley have made the careers of so many artists who would probably be unknown otherwise and exposed millions of people to great new music.

When asked what great song she knows from TikTok alone, sophomore Julieta Montes said that Woman by Doja Cat is currently her favorite song, and she first heard it in the viral dance created by Tracy Joseph, a creator similar to Haley Sharpe.

Everytime this question was asked, most of the replies were different because so many songs have been and are being discovered or re-discovered on Tiktok. More Than a Woman by The Bee Gees is one of junior Isabella Gomez’s all time favorites.

“I used to listen to this song all the time on road trips with my parents, but I completely forgot about it until I heard it on TikTok one day, and I’m so happy that I did,” Gomez said.

Junior Sophia Coleman said, “I used to listen to it when I was younger too, I think it’s a really nostalgic song, but I love it regardless.”

Similarly, Freshman Ella Garcia said that Traitor by Olivia Rodrigo is her favorite song to listen to in the car, and lots of people had the same opinion, all pertaining to Olivia Rodrigo’s album Sour.

A three month long lip syncing trend surrounding the most popular song on the album, Drivers License has over 1.5 million videos using the song, with the top video having 6.6 million likes This translates to over 1 billion streams on Spotify alone.

Overall, TikTok is doing a lot for the music industry. With 1 billion users worldwide listening to music that is released on the app, the number of streams for new and old songs will continue to rise.  While social media can be perceived as detrimental, the contribution that this app in particular has made in the lives of many music artists who may have been left unnoticed otherwise is amazing.
