Olivia Wilde’s long awaited film, Don’t Worry Darling, came out in theaters on September 23, 2022. This psychological thriller stars famous singer, Harry Styles, and renowned actress, Florence Pugh.

Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) live in an isolated community called Victory. Here, the men leave their wives everyday to go work on the top secret “Victory Project”. In this utopia, the men get to “work on progressive materials” while their wives get to stay at home tending to their husbands and enjoying the luxury of this high class community. The only thing asked of these women is that they do not ask questions regarding their spouses careers. However, this leads Alice to go into a spiral of doubt and question what is really going on in this “paradise”. 

“I thought Don’t Worry Darling was an amazing movie ,” senior Katherine Bilbao said. “It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Harry Styles and Florence Pugh did a great job of making me feel like I was really in the movie.”

Although visually appealing, many movie critics have some conflicting opinions about the film.

Scott Tobias on Rotten Tomatoes said, “It takes a while for Don’t Worry Darling to reveal itself as abysmal, because it spends such a grueling amount of time being merely pedestrian.”

There is a lot of controversy on whether the movie was a hit or not. It is argued that Pugh carried most of the movie with her profound role, while some of the other actors lacked in truly embodying their character. 

“In contrary to popular belief, I think his acting was very good considering that he has never been an actor before, “ senior Diana Rincon said. “For what was given, I think he had an excellent performance.” 

However, others say that the movie was exceptional and left them in awe by the turn of events in the film. Wilde also hinted at many aspects dealing with sexism and the patriarchy. The movie portrays a lot of the “feminine roles” expected from women in the 1950’s and tackles the reality of gender roles at the time.

Personally, I think the movie was very intriguing, and left me on the edge of my seat. Harry Styles is fairly new at being an actor, and I think he did his best coming from a different acting background than the other actors. Overall, I think everyone should give the movie a try despite the differentiating opinions and controversy.
