Golf Team Makes History

The golf team made history on October 6 during a match against Coral Gables at Briar Bay Golf Course.. Sophomores Megan Bermejo and Julia Ortega both scored a hole-in-one, within one minute of each other, which is ground-breaking in the golf world.

“It is super rare and the fact that it happened with me and Megan on the same day is totally insane,” Ortega said.

This was a major accomplishment for not only the girls, but also their head coach, Ignacio Vazquez, who in his 11 years of coaching golf, has never seen anything like this.

This big win does not go to undermine the rest of the team’s successful season so far. While they have not gone undefeated, the team itself has improved and the girls have been able to lower their scores. With practices two to three times a week, they have been able to practice their technique and focus on course management, which are the decisions players make on the course and strategies they have that could help improve their game.

In addition to getting physically stronger, the team has been able to bond with each other and get closer as a group. Despite golf being an individual sport where players try to beat their own scores, having a team to support makes a huge difference in the performance of the players.

“Even though it was a lot of luck, I definitely think having my teammates there with me helped me make that hole-in-one and have such a good season,” Bermejo said.

The girls carried this bond with them to their district match on October 24 and ended up placing second, giving them the opportunity to compete in regionals on October 31 in the Boca Raton Golf and Racket Club. After regionals the team would like to return to the state championships and possibly take home the trophy.
