Sofia Santamaria: The 2023 High School Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year

Senior Sofia Santamaria was recently named this years high school girls’ volleyball Player of the Year by the Miami Herald. Out of the 18 nominees from across Miami-Dade County, she achieved the most votes from the online poll that decided the winner. In the following Q&A, Santamaria answers highly anticipated questions pertaining to her recent win and overall success in her sport.
Q: How did you feel when you found out you won this award?
A: I was truly honored and grateful for everyone that took the time to vote for me.
Q: Is there anyone that you want to thank that helped you get to where you are now?
A: I want to thank my father for always pushing me and believing in me even when I didn’t myself.
Q: How long have you been playing volleyball?
A: I’ve been playing volleyball since I was 7.
Q: Do you have any advice that you can share with young players who aspire to get to where you are?
A: One piece of advice that I would give to young players would be to always be the hardest worker in the room.
Q: How do you think Lourdes has helped you get to where you are?
A: I think that the support and love that I had from my teachers, coaches, and friends from Lourdes is what helped me get to where I am.
Q: What would you say is your greatest strength as an athlete?
A: I would say that my greatest strength as an athlete is my leadership
Q: Did you celebrate winning this award and if so what did you do?
A: I received several phone calls and messages from my friends and family.
Q: Are there any pro athletes that you look up to as an inspiration?
A: One pro athlete that I look up to is Pele.
Q: Do you plan to continue to play?
A: I decided to end my volleyball career in high school but I will continue to play with my friends on the weekends.
