Spring in full Swing: Beach Volleyball

Toes in the sand and the sun beaming, it’s not a  vacation day for this squad, but a Game Day. Beginning in late February, the Beach Volleyball Team started their 2nd season in school history. The 13 player roster is made up of 5 double teams and is thrilled for its second season.

“It reminds me that summer is almost here and it’s so fun doing the sport I love, while I’m on the beach and getting tan,” sophomore Olivia Guzman said.

This hot new sport is a 2v2 match, best out of 3 sets to 21 points.  Each double team has a ranking from 1 to 5, which ranks the individual teams for when they play against their opponents. Despite the smaller court size, the net height is the same as indoor, making this Summer Olympic Sport that much more competitive.

Junior Emma Lizma plays makes an impressive dig.

Last year the team finished off their inaugural season with a 7-2 record, finishing 2nd in the District. This year the team has high hopes to take the District title.

“As the team captain and only senior on the team, I’ve made it my goal to push and motivate my team to compete at the highest level. I’m so excited for the rest of our season,” senior Sofia Sanatamaria said.

Starting off with a bang, in their season opener the team swept True North Classical Academy with a 5-0 win. The team shows a lot of promise and has been working very hard in the off season to compete this Spring. Many players also compete with the school’s indoor volleyball team, so volleyball for those athletes is year round.

Whether it’s beach or indoor volleyball, I am always working hard to improve and they both give me an opportunity to show my competitive side. My dad played beach volleyball competitively growing up and his passion for it is still there today. He always says that beach volleyball is an amazing outlet to portray all your skills and talents as an individual player,” sophomore Ella Garcia said.

The team has 5 more games until their District Tournament, which they will face off versus reigning state champions, Westminster Christian.

The team shows much promise as they hit the halfway point of their season, and they cannot wait to see what the rest of this season has in store for them.
