A Sophomore-Junior Tradition

Junior and sophomore year are usually considered the most uneventful high school years, with only a few events specifically designated for them. While freshmen and seniors have their well-known big sister-little sister Getty, an ongoing tradition that allows for these two grades to really get to know one another, sophomores and juniors had always been excluded from this memorable event — that is, until last year. Last school year, the Sophomore – Junior Getty was introduced, enabling new bonds and friendships to form between these two classes.

Junior student council members, Bianca Baena and Justina Montaldo, announcing the winners of the games.

On August 28th, 2023, the classes of 2025 and 2026 gathered in the dining hall to play games and enjoy treats, while forming friendships between grades. The sophomore and junior student councils worked tirelessly, planning this event, in order to bring these two grades together.

“The sophomore and junior councils first met separately to think of ideas for food, games, and other fun activities,” sophomore student council member, Alexandra Brea said. “We then had a meeting together to discuss what activities would be most successful in getting people to talk and socialize with girls in different grades.”

The getty was kicked off with a game of matching name tags. Every girl was given a name tag that corresponded to another girl’s in the opposite grade and then they would have to go around looking for their complementary sophomore or junior.

Juniors: Carmela Pulido, Frances Ryan, Cristina Sanchez, and Stella Arthur, enjoying red and orange candy at the Getty.

“I had a lot of fun looking for my matching sophomore, even though it took me a little while to find her,” junior Antonella Rojo said. “I even talked with other sophomores while looking. They tried to help me find my match and in turn, I helped look for theirs.”

After finding their correct match, students participated in a game of guessing the movie by emoji, where the first few teams who guessed the correct movies, won a prize. This activity encouraged teamwork and even a little healthy competition.

“Trying to guess the movie title was really hard but also super fun,” junior Sophia Rodriguez said. “I really got to know the sophomore I was working with.”

The getty was concluded with fun music and red and orange candies for the students to enjoy. Overall, this event gave students an opportunity to form connections with girls that they otherwise wouldn’t have met.
