P.E. teacher and coach Victoria Goudie has brought new life into one of the most vital academic departments at school. Although Physical Fitness is a required and longstanding institution in most schools, many fail to realize just how beneficial it is to high school students.
“The purpose of P.E is to teach students concepts of personal fitness to adopt throughout their lives,” Goudie said.
An enthusiastic alumnus and spirited bobcat, Goudie does her best to make sure that her students understand the importance of health and wellness. Her favorite part of teaching is watching the girls progress through their fitness journey.
“I love getting to know my students and seeing them grow in their fitness,” Goudie said. “It’s awesome to see my girls improve on runs and other fitness activities throughout the year.”
Goudie is adamant on teaching physical education in a fun and stimulating environment—especially to freshmen. Young people can learn from and apply the teachings of the course as they graduate into adulthood. She believes that underclassmen specifically benefit from the class in a unique way.
“It gives them an opportunity to learn about their bodies and how to develop them to work more efficiently,” Goudie said. “At the end of the day, this is the body we will be in for the rest of our lives so we should learn how to manage it!”
In addition to P.E. Goudie also started teaching a self-defense class at school. She has set out to help students understand how to defend themselves and avoid violence overall. Through active practice and new techniques, Goudie has created a safe and educational space for students.
“In self-defense, we got materials so the students can practice punching, kicking, and grappling in a safe environment,” Goudie said.
Passion and commitment is what truly sets Goudie apart as a likable and effective teacher. Her enthusiasm towards the topics she discusses proves her unwavering commitment to the importance of these lessons.
“In self-defense, I love talking about de-escalation techniques because my students learn ways to de-escalate any situation, big or small,” Goudie said.
Any student, current or former, can attest to Goudie’s effective teaching style and the fun and welcoming environment she provides in her classroom.
“I love Coach Vicky,” sophomore Isabella Alvarez said. “She is an amazing teacher that really cares a lot about her students.”
Aside from her teaching skills and kind demeanor, Goudie cultivates a learning environment that also benefits the girls in ways even she may not be aware of.
“I think it’s beneficial because we are able to make friends in a very social class,” Alvarez said.
Goudie’s ultimate goal is to encourage girls to implement daily, healthy, physical tactics to improve their quality of life, now and in the future.
“I love when we discuss adopting healthy lifestyles because we learn about goal setting which I think is important for young girls to understand,” Goudie said.
