The varsity basketball team is back on the court and having a successful season so far.
The team practiced all year in preparation for the start of their official season in November. Practices are held Monday through Saturday for two hours each day. The girls’ relentless dedication to victory has not gone unnoticed, as they are currently standing 13 to 1 in their games this season.
“At the beginning of the year we had one of the smallest teams, so we knew it would not be easy,” senior and captain Luciana Picasso said. “Still, we all band together and work hard to achieve our current standings.”
Unlike previous years, the basketball team has been reduced to just a varsity team. This, however, does not stop them from representing the school and playing to the best of their abilities.
The team is directed by head coach Christopher McKeon and assistant coach Jose Merdjane. The coaches have dedicated themselves to their team and have inspired the girls to keep working towards their common goals.
“Mr. Mckeon keeps us motivated because no matter how many wins we have under our belt, he always reminds us to never be satisfied,” senior Micaela Perez said. “He keeps us in check but is always encouraging us to be aggressive and give our best effort.”
The team hopes to win their district championship and advance to regionals.
Win or lose, the basketball team has one of the strongest bonds on the courts.
“My favorite part of the team is how close we all are and how we’d all do anything for each other,” Perez said.
Their success would not be possible without the positive mindset and motivation that each girl on the team carries with her to every game.
“We all go into games with grit and play hard, even if the team is ranked better than us,” Picasso said.
Their winning mentality has truly been displayed so far and is sure to carry them far as the season progresses.
