On Tuesday, in addition to the Big Sister/Little Sister Getty, the 2nd and 3rd year bobcats participated in the Sophomore/Junior Getty. 11th and 10th grade student councils hosted this event during FOCUS as a fun, social opportunity between grades. They made sure to organize an exciting get-together filled with games and social activities in the cafeteria.
“We got together and collaborated with sophomore council to come up with fun game ideas,” junior council member Gaby Blanch said. “Our goal was to unite and ultimately strengthen the bond of sisterhood between classes.”
It served as a rare opportunity for the two grades to interact and talk to fellow students that were once in their shoes. Above the music and the voices of council members on stage, it was possible to hear conversations comparing classes and teachers throughout the cafeteria.
“I really liked hanging out with the sophomores,” junior Nailah Bouchereau said. “I have a lot of friends in that grade and it’s really nice to see everyone come together and have fun.”
The room was divided in two halves based on students’ FOCUS blocks. Sophomores and juniors each had a sticker with a word that matched another sticker of a student from the opposite grade. Once each student found their pair, they sat and worked together on a word search.
While the process of finding a partner with the corresponding sticker proved to be a bit of a challenge, most students were able to find and sit with their sophomore or junior counterparts before the games began.
“It was a bit hectic,” said sophomore Sofia Andion.“But it was exciting to see the sisterhood grow a little bit through friendships with the upperclassmen.”
Soon after, donuts were passed out and the second game started. It was a finish-the-lyric challenge where sophomores and juniors faced off in teams against each other, singing popular songs.
“It was honestly really fun, I enjoyed the sing-along because I thought it was very funny and entertaining to watch,” Andion said.
Most students were able to sit at a table or on the floor with their friends and their new sophomore or junior OLLA sister. Towards the end of the getty, most of them were able to talk with girls from the opposite grade aside from just their partners and socialize more in groups.
