From future doctors to aspiring lawyers to hopeful dermatologists, the school boasts a diverse group of students with varied career interests. At the forefront of this is Mrs. Minoso, the Externship Coordinator. She is responsible for allocating exciting and unique externships so that every student can get a taste of what their future might look like in their field of choice.
However, there are a few things that students should keep in mind as they enroll in this enriching program. According to Mrs. Miñoso, the most frequent issue that students have with the program is properly filling out their Baptist and Nicklaus Hospital paperwork, for those who wish to participate in one of the two medical opportunities.
“Baptist Observer gives people a lot of headaches,” Mrs. Miñoso admitted.
Those interested should take note that these specific programs require personal medical information, the student’s doctor’s signature, and proof of certain medical tests carried out within twelve months of the externship, among other requirements.
The main purpose of this program is to allow students the opportunities and experiences, that they could only get by working and learning in real life businesses and careers.
“Before we started this program, kids didn’t have the opportunity to go out, and it’s hard to get externships on their own,” Mrs. Miñoso said. “I can help them get their foot in the door.”
Certainly, this program offers girls the unique opportunity to experience their future careers, as high school students. Through this program, they are able to try out different careers, for a short period of time, and decide what interests them the most.
“Every externship that I did helped solidify that I want to work with children in the future with medicine,” senior Natalie Pando said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to explore different careers and figure out what I’d want to study and pursue in terms of my academics.”
All students who wish to participate must complete their liability waiver. This must be signed both by the students and the parents and uploaded to the corresponding Showbie classroom assigned to each grade.
