On Friday, December 6, seniors took part in a lip-sync battle against Belen Jesuit Preparatory School at the annual Polar Palooza event. This friendly and festive competition is not only a fun and memorable night for students, but also a philanthropic event that collects and donates toys to children battling cancer. Every participant and attendee contributes by bringing an unwrapped toy, which is later taken to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. This year, the event was bigger and more impactful than ever, providing hundreds of children with gifts that will help spread Christmas joy. It was truly a special and wonderful way to feel and spread the magic of the holiday season!
Five teams from each school consisting of 15-20 students worked diligently for 3 weeks to prepare Christmas themed music mixes, creative introductory videos and entertaining dances. From grandmas to ninjas to elves, bobcats brought the Christmas cheer with their energetic performances!
“The whole preparation for Polar Palooza was so exciting,” senior Sofia Ruiz said. “My team would get to school at 6am to practice almost every morning the week prior, and we made so many memories in the process. We went to the Christmas Wonderland to film our intro video, and spent so much time together that we were able to enjoy ourselves in a time of year that is so stressful school-wise. It really made the first semester of senior year so memorable and fun!”
One of the teams, Santa’s Seniors particularly stood out with their costumes, popular songs, and surprises. They were awarded the “People’s Choice” award, chosen by the audience, which was no shock because of how engaged the audience was during the entirety of their performance.
“Being voted people’s choice for polar palooza was an amazing moment where all the time and effort we put into the performance paid off,” senior Gaby Soler, a member of Santa’s Seniors, said. “My friends and I were very happy when we won people’s choice but even happier when we won polar palooza because we knew how much everyone worked for it and made everything worth it at that moment.”
This event was a perfect example of how school spirit, teamwork, and community service can come together to create something special. Not only did students have a blast, but they also contributed to a meaningful cause, making this year’s Polar Palooza a success for everyone involved.
