Inherited fame…Is it really fame?

What is a nepo-baby? How do people even know if they are truly talented or successful?

Personally I think it’s really easy to tell, but I’ll let the readers decide.

A nepo-baby, in a nutshell, is the successful child of a celebrity. Someone like Kate Hudson or Lily Rose Depp. There’s a lot of debate going around about whether or not these people’s success has truly been earned, so let’s explain it all.

Freshman Jessica Lee said, “I really dislike these nepotism babies because they’ve never had to work for anything.”

Many  people don’t know this, but New York’s SNL is known as the “Nepotism Capital”. Much of their employment has to do with a debt repaid by family connections. For Example, Lorne Michaels hired both his cousin and his wife. Robert Downey junior was also put on the show, but for the sole reason that he is the nephew of Jim Downey, one of the best writers on the show. Rolling Stone ended up naming him “ the worst cast member in their run”.

Those are all some good examples of unearned fame, but let’s talk about some real successes, in spite of their parents. Kate Hudson, star of “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days”, is a nepo-baby herself. Her parents are, actress, Goldie Hawn, who costarred in the recent “Christmas Chronicles”; her father is, musician, Bill Hudson. Despite Hudson’s parents’ successes, she has made a name for herself starring in a number of blockbuster movies.

Junior Alexandria Espineira said, “One time I heard Tom hanks say that being a nepotism baby is like ‘being in a family business’ and I totally agree.”

Another example is Jessica Capshaw whose father is THE Steven Spielberg. Capshaw starred in “Grey’s Anatomy” as the character, Arizona Robbins. She changed her last name to her mothers name to try to make sure she earned her successes, and she did just that. The show is now reaching its nineteenth season with Capshaw still on the cast.

Nepo-babies may be a controversial topic, but there is no denying that many of these people have earned their fame. Despite the beliefs of many people on social media I think I’ve proven that you can’t generalize a group of people into being untalented just because of who their parents are. It’s unfair to group them like that when so many have worked so hard to be their own person and not just a shadow of their parents.
