More Than Just A Game

#KatyStrong

Soccer, Strength, and Sisterhood- filling the University of Miami’s Cobb stadium, the Lourdes’s varsity soccer team played an extra special match on November 14th versus the Carrollton Cyclones. Carrollton is another all girls school, located in Coconut Grove, that was deeply affected by the recent boating accident. Many of the girls are good friends with each other. Although usually known as the biggest rival for our school, this night was different.

During warmups, the bobcat team was sporting “#KatyStrong” warmup shirts, complete with her number, 19. From the Freshman to the Seniors, the field was filled with 19s.

“We have Katy with us every game,” goalie Gaby Paredes said. “Every game I strive to play like she would. I know she always plays with immense strength and I play for her.”

Before the first whistle blew, the Bobcats and Cyclones gathered in the middle of the field, joined by the school’s president Sister Carmen, and their #1 fan: Deacon Louis. United in their faith these two teams along with the over 100 fans joined in this prayer service.

Deacon led them in a reverent service, whilst reminding the players and fans in the stands of the drive and determination their teammate Katy has for the sport of soccer. Katy’s dedication is a constant factor that keeps the soccer team going.

The girls got to gather together for a friendly competition and a reminder of how special Katy and Lucy will always be. As an additional reminder, the team has a special K made out of pictures of her and her friends, to symbolize their Senior captain always being there.

“As the soccer season starts we play every game with Katy in our hearts,” Senior Rebecca Sampedro said.

She had the idea to make a physical reminder that Katy is by our side, a K with pictures of Katy with her family and friends.

“I can’t help but smile whenever I have it because I know Katy would want us to do what she loves and that’s play soccer,” Senior Camila Alvarez said.

After an hour and a half of play, the game ended with a Bobcats win of 6-1. Junior Tessa Abreu scored 2 of the six goals. Along with Sophomores Antonella Monsalve, Mia Roca, Siena Aviles and junior Eva Cova who each scored 1 respectfully.

At the conclusion of the match both teams joined in center field for a moment together, to pray for both of their communities through this time. The Cyclones gifted our bobcats with a #KatyStrong shin guard cover and daisy gift bags. Additionally each player received daisies in honor of their sister Lucy.

The soccer team is having an undefeated season so far, with a 4-0 record, including a shutout against St. Thomas Aquinas.  The Bobcats will continue their regular season into the end of January, followed by the playoffs.

This season is unlike any other, however the Bobcats remain unbreakable.
