Reflecting and Resetting: How to Make the Most of 2023
Midnight hits and Brazilians jump seven waves while making seven wishes. Spaniards eat twelve grapes, and Greeks hang onions over doors. New Years traditions vary across the world, but the premise behind every celebration is analogous. The start of a new year gives us a clean slate; it is a symbol for starting over. New Year’s offers us a precise moment, a natural starting line, to better our lives and ourselves. Inspired by this new beginning, here are some ideas to help make the most of 2023.
We suggest starting off this year by reflecting on 2022. Reflecting on the past year allows us to acknowledge everything we’ve been through and what we’ve learnt. It strengthens our self-awareness while giving us the opportunity to process and untangle our lives and thoughts. As inspiration for reflections, we looked back on lessons and skills learned, accomplishments, surprises and favorite moments, and how we changed from the beginning of 2022 to now. One of our favorite ways to end off a 2022 reflection is by considering what we hope to leave in 2022, and what we hope to bring into 2023.
I decided that the most important thing for me to bring into 2023 is gratitude. I believe the best way to ring in the new year is with a grateful mindset. According to numerous studies in positive psychology, gratitude is strongly associated with happiness. The simple act of pausing for thankful appreciation helps to increase positive emotions, improve health and self-esteem, build strong relationships, and reduce anxiety. Practicing gratitude enriches our lives in many other ways, so we encourage you to choose aspects from 2022 that you are most grateful for. From experiences and people to a new favorite song, there is so much to be thankful for.
Possibly the most common New Year’s tradition is making resolutions. We know, resolutions can be intimidating, but being intentional about growth and goals will help you achieve results. You’ll never know how far you can go if you don’t try. Even if your resolution isn’t achieved, the attempt itself can be incredibly rewarding and beneficial. Remember that hopefulness and positivity serve as motivation to act.
When making resolutions, it is important to write down your goals and keep them somewhere you can see them often, like on a nightstand or as a phone wallpaper. This keeps goals at the front of our minds and motivates us to chase after them every day. As for choosing the right goals, we suggest deciding on goals that come from your 2022 reflection; if you recognized habits you want to break or fears you want to overcome, then focus on these to set a resolution. It is also important to be specific when setting goals. Choosing to “be more productive” is good, but creating a schedule and choosing to set aside specific hours to get work done each day is better. While achieving your goals, rememb
er to check in with yourself to stay on track. We suggest doing this by recording your progress daily, weekly or monthly. Finally, remember to celebrate small successes; stay positive and motivate yourself to keep going.
With busy school schedules back in full effect, it may seem overwhelming to think about and plan for the future. Remember that this new year is a blessing, and we have the chance to change. This year, be motivated to embrace every opportunity. Do not be afraid to make mistakes; mistakes are proof that we are trying new things, growing, and living passionately. The future is bright, so do what you can to make the most
of it. We hope 2023 brings you many blessings and boundless joy.
