Running into the Season

After many uncertainties, the cross-country team has finally started the season with many new changes.

The season normally starts at the beginning of August, but this year practices began the week of September 7 since the Archdioceses postponed the season because of COVID-19.

“For many weeks, I waited for Coach Jove to email us when the season would start,” junior Olivia Alvarez said.

Coach Javi Jove emailed the team with practice dates and many new guidelines on September 6, but the girls could not wait to start.

“Everyone is required to put on their mask and get their temperature checked by Coach Jove as we arrive at practice. He has assigned us with small groups that we will be practicing with for the next couple of months,” junior Olivia Alvarez said.

The team was used to having the option of running with a larger group, but they are becoming accustomed to the new guidelines.

“I think the girls have done a good job adapting to our new safety measures. Everything is new for us this year but they’ve understood the importance of safety measures and smaller groups have actually helped us stay very organized,” Coach Jove said.

This season is a little different because the meets are limited, but a group of 20 girls raced this past weekend at the Viking International. Coach Jove and the team are looking forward to future races as a team.
